1. 1865

   Agricultural subdivisions

   Rancho land was subdivided for agriculture in 1865 as settlement developed in the area.

   A railroad town

   The Southern Pacific Railroad reached the area in 1873, helping establish the town between earlier settlements.

   A city incorporates

   Downey incorporated on December 17, 1956.

4. 1999

   An aerospace chapter closes

   Rockwell International closed its Downey plant in 1999, ending a major chapter in the city’s aerospace industry.
